“Perhaps we have been afraid to voice a desire in our heart.”
Por Juan P. Ruiz SJ.
We can so often act just like the people in this story. We can put up many arguments and defenses against following the advice of Christ such as loving our enemies or bringing what is in the dark into the light: “No one has the time to listen to me.” “She won’t be able to talk about it.” “He won’t understand.”
The wonderful news in the Gospel is that Jesus will walk right into the middle of that crowd within us trying to convince us that he isn’t right or worth listening to; that it is not yet time to do the right thing. Jesus will take his time to answer every argument that crowd can conceive as long as we are willing to stay present in prayer. As he says, he is the stronger one. If we stay present to him, he will overpower all of the defenses, set them aside, and give us the freedom to share the gifts God gives to us.
The icing on the cake is that the whole story begins with Jesus healing a mute person. Perhaps today we know there is something good and kind God is calling us to do, but which worries us. Perhaps we have been afraid to voice a desire in our heart. Today’s Gospel assures us that Jesus patiently walks into our life and will do everything to let us out of the castles we sometimes build for ourselves. There is a whole world beyond those walls.
